The first call for papers
The 3rd International Workshop on Organisational Semiotics

Background
The first workshop was held in Twente in 1995 and the second one took place
in Almelo in September 1999
(http://www.soc.staffs.ac.uk/research/groups/semiotics99/index.html). These
workshops were driven by an increasing need felt by colleagues for a better
understanding of information and its functions in the society and
organisations. This has resulted in a collective effort towards
establishing the theory of organisational semiotics for studying
organisations, human communication and information systems. The community,
formed and strengthened by these events, consists of educators, researchers
and consultants in the fields of information theory, organisation studies,
information systems, computation, language and communication..
In the last two workshops, participants not only had opportunities to
present their work, but also enjoyed lively and constructive discussions,
which proved to be beneficial to many research groups. A book containing
selected papers from this workshop will be produced in early 2000. It is
hoped the publication of this book and a number of more resulting from the
following workshops will meet the demand for research and teaching
materials in the fields of organisational semiotics and its applications
such as business process modelling, knowledge engineering, organisational
studies, information management and systems development.
The IFIP Working Group 8.1 has preliminarily expressed its interest in
endorsing this workshop. The WG8.1 has already planned to run its working
conference entitled "Organisational Semiotics" in Montreal in 2001, which
will be contributed by most of the workshop participants (with Ronald
Stamper as the conference chair and Kecheng Liu as the PC chair).
Objectives
The workshop first of all will provide a continuing opportunity for the
colleagues who have been involved in the community in the past years, and
will be also open to any one interested in the subject area. This will
enable us to exchange new ideas, and inform the development of their work.
This is part of the effort from this research community in establishing a
discipline of study of information and communication in the context of
organisations, with or without the use of information technology. The
workshop will also serve as an important platform for any one - educators,
researchers, practitioners and students - who is interested in or has
worked in semiotics and semiotic approaches to information and its use in
organisational contexts.
Workshop Format
The workshop will last one day (in contrast with the format of multiple
days as run in the first two workshops). This is constrained by the format
set by the ICEIS2000 committee, as this workshop is organised as part of
that conference. It is intended that all papers will be sent to workshop
participants for them to study before they come to the workshop; therefore
the discussion after each presentation can be in more depth. Each accepted
paper will be assigned to a discussant, who will lead the discussion after
the paper presentation at the workshop, as well as critique the paper for
further improvement for possible inclusion into a book for publication.
Paper submissions
Prospective authors are invited to submit their extended abstracts (ca.2000
words) in the first place. Preliminary acceptance with comments will be
given to the abstract authors to facilitate the production of the full
papers. Papers presented at the workshop will be further selected for
publication in the second book in the series of Organisational Semiotics.

ICEIS 2000: 2nd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENTERPRISE INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Organised by the School of Computing at Staffordshire University, UK and
the Escola Superior de Tecnologia of Setúbal, Portugal, and in cooperation
with the British Computer Society and the International Federation for
Information Processing, Working Group 8.1.
SCOPE
The purpose of this 2nd International Conference on Enterprise Information
Systems (ICEIS) is to bring together researchers, engineers and
practitioners interested in the advances and business applications of
information systems. Four simultaneous tracks will be held, covering
different aspects of Enterprise Computing, including Enterprise Database
Applications, Artificial Intelligence Applications and Decision Support
Systems, Systems Analysis and Specification, and Internet and Electronic
Commerce.
ICEIS focuses on real world applications; therefore authors should
highlight the benefits of Information Technology for industry and services.
Ideas on how to solve business problems, using IT, will arise from the
conference. Papers describing advanced prototypes, systems, tools and
techniques and general survey papers indicating future directions are also
encouraged. Papers describing original work are invited in any of the areas
listed below. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the
authors, will be published in the Proceedings of ICEIS. Acceptance will be
based on quality, relevance and originality. There will be both oral and
poster sessions.
Special sessions, dedicated to case-studies and commercial presentations,
as well as technical tutorials, dedicated to technical/scientific topics,
are also envisaged: companies interested in presenting their
products/methodologies or researchers interested in holding a tutorial are
invited to contact the conference secretariat.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Authors should submit a paper in English of up to 5,000 words, both by
e-mail (attached file in an accepted format - see below) and surface mail
(2 printed copies) to the conference secretariat (see address below).
Papers received after the deadline may be returned unopened. The programme
committee will review all papers and the first author of each paper will be
notified of acceptance, by email. Each paper should clearly indicate the
nature of its technical/scientific contribution, and the problems, domains
or environments to which it is applicable. Authors must also indicate the
topic area to which the paper is submitted.
Due to space limitations in the Proceedings, the maximum number of pages
for each paper is limited to 5 (five). If absolutely needed, it is possible
to increase the total number of pages up to 8 pages. However, for each page
in excess of 5 the authors must pay an additional fee of £50 for each
excess page.
- Format of the paper:
Submitted papers should be formatted for A4 size paper, and must be written
in English, and carefully checked for correct grammar and spelling. Papers
should be submitted in a 2-column format; each column should be 7.5cm wide,
with a space of 0.8cm between the columns. The text should be in Times New
Roman, 11pt, justified and single-spaced. There should be no
headers/footers and no page numbers. Margins requirements are as follows:
Top: 3.3 cm; Bottom: 4.2cm; Left 2.6cm; Right: 2.6cm.
The title, author, affiliation(s), contact details, abstract and list of
keywords should be justified and single-spaced in a single column across
the width of the printable area.
The paper should include:
(a) The title: 14 pt bold type, centred over two columns, and in upper case.
(b) Authors and affiliations (incl. full address and e-mail) should all be
11pt, centred, under the title. Authors (bold) and affiliation/contact
details (italic) should be centred. For multiple authors use a superscript
to indicate affiliation/contact details.
(c) Abstract: maximum 200 words, 11pt.
(d) Keywords: maximum of five, under abstract, separated by commas.
(e) Headings should be numbered and in mixed case 12pt. bold text.
Generally two, and at most three levels of numbered headings should be used.
(f) Figures should be numbered sequentially, with a 10pt. caption centred
immediately below. Figures should be placed in the main text, as close as
possible to their first reference, and centred in a column or across the
page if necessary.
(g) Bibliographical references should be listed alphabetically at the end
of the paper, before any appendices. Use 11pt. single spaced text.
References within the text should be in the Harvard referencing style.

For email submission, the only accepted formats are RTF, Postscript or PDF.
- Multiple submissions:
If a paper has been submitted to other conferences it may also be submitted
to ICEIS as long as (1) it is not published or presented at other
conferences, (2) the author clearly indicates on the paper the other places
where it has been submitted, and (3) the author notifies the programme
chair if he/she submits the paper to other conferences during the ICEIS
review process.
SUBMISSION OF TECHNICAL TUTORIALS, WORKSHOPS OR EXHIBITS
Any person interested in organising a tutorial, workshop, or exhibition
should submit a proposal to the secretariat, before 31st January 2000, by
e-mail ([log in to unmask]). These will be held on 4th July
2000. Proposals should specify the topic and scope of the tutorial, the
background knowledge expected of the participants, and a résumé of the
instructor(s).
Companies interested in presenting their products, showing documentation
about them or demonstrating some application, are invited to contact the
secretariat and make a reservation for a booth at the conference site.
PROCEEDINGS AND BOOK PUBLICATION
All accepted papers whose authors confirm participation at the conference
will be published in the ICEIS 2000 proceedings. A number of papers will be
selected for publication in a book to be published by a major worldwide
publisher.
