Call for Papers for CBG2000:
The CSCW2000 Workshop on Component-based Groupware
December 2, 2000, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
ABSTRACT
The CSCW2000 workshop on component-based groupware [1,2] deals
with enhancing groupware to suit a wide variety of needs. It
will provide a forum for discussion for researchers from
different backgrounds, such as CSCW software development,
distributed systems, component-based software and group
communication. We will discuss ways to combine approaches, as
well as benefits, the state of the art, requirements and a
research agenda for "Component-based Groupware". The results
will support researchers, designers and software engineers in
the design and implementation of groupware applications. The
workshop should contribute to an enhanced insight in the
domain, provide a means to receive feedback on research-in-
progress, and provide a basis for further research.
THEME
Recent research has identified composability, extensibility,
and tailorability as key aspects of systems that support groups
of interacting people. Component-based design is a means to
achieve these requirements in groupware systems. Meanwhile,
component-based design of systems has evolved rapidly due to
the progress in standardisation of component software (e.g.,
CORBA components, (Enterprise) JavaBeans, and COM+). These
developments provide opportunities to construct groupware in a
modular and extensible fashion and to standardize (interfaces
of) common CSCW software components. Yet, many open issues
remain. In this light, the workshop will address the following
main question: What should be provided to support users,
designers and developers of component-based groupware, and how
do we get there from current state of the art?
OBJECTIVES AND TOPICS
The CSCW2000 workshop on Component-based Groupware will be a
forum for researchers from different areas, such as for CSCW
software development, distributed systems, and component
software for discussing the state of the art and a research
agenda for Component-based Groupware. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* CSCW component software architectures: which types of
components and how should do they relate?
* experiences with developing component-based groupware
systems/frameworks;
* key requirements of component-based groupware systems/
frameworks;
* enhancing existing component-based platforms for support of
CSCW software engineering;
* end-user composability versus design-time composabilty and
its effect on component groupware architectures;
* intra-system component interaction standards (e.g., the IETF
mbus Internet Draft [4]);
* inter-system component interaction standards (e.g., ITU T.120
and H.323, IETF SIP / SDP [5,6,7,8] );
* streaming media support in component-based groupware systems/
frameworks;
The workshop will comprise a full day of discussions, starting
with brief presentations of the papers, followed by a plenary
discussion about the aspects that need to be distinguished, and
separate breakout sessions in the afternoon on these aspects
that allow for optimal discussion with fellow researchers. The
workshop will close with the groups reporting back and a wrap-
up of the workshop.
The goal of the workshop will be to form a community of
researchers that work on the topic of component-based
groupware, accompanied by a roadmap of open issues for further
research. Ultimately, the ideal result of the workshop would be
to provide input for standardization in this area. (e.g., IETF
or OMG standards).
EVALUATION AND PUBLICATION OF SUBMITTED PAPERS
Participants to the workshop (ca. 10 papers max) will be
invited based on submission of papers, which will be reviewed
by the workshop program committee. Participants are required to
register to the CSCW2000 conference [2].
The purpose of papers is to provide a seed for debate and
discussion. The workshop organizers encourage participants to
present suggestions for future directions.
Workshop papers will be published electronically at the
workshop web site. After the workshop, the organisers will seek
arrangements with publishers to have workshop papers published,
e.g., in a special issue of a journal.

Deadline for workshop paper submission:
September 29, 2000
Notification of Acceptance:
October 13, 2000
Early registration deadline for CSCW2000:
