                     CALL FOR PAPERS

                     Special Issue
on

            "EVOLVING USE OF
GROUPWARE"
http://www.telin.nl/events/ecscw99evo/specialissue.html

of
the:
COMPUTER SUPPORTED COOPERATIVE WORK:
THE JOURNAL OF COLLABORATIVE
COMPUTING

published by Kluwer

THEME

More often than not, users appear
to use groupware differently than the
groupware designers intended. In
particular, the organisation of their work
and their working practices
change over time as they 're-invent' the
technology or even develop novel
uses. Groupware should be able to meet the
changing but unpredictable needs
of groups - but how? And how may groups be
helped to develop adequate
working patterns or novel applications with this
groupware?
Understanding
the processes of evolving groupware use is a first step
toward answering
these questions. Therefore a critical mass of long-term
case studies is
needed to analyse the dynamics of groupware use.
Of equal importance is the
development of conceptual frameworks to enable
the comparison of these case
studies. In the CSCW research community
various theories are used to
analyse such case studies, e.g.: Activity
Theory, Structuration Theory,
Adaptive Structuration Theory, Sociotechnical
Systems Theory,
Self-Organisation Theory, Situated Action Theory,
Contingency Theory. These
theories have to be assessed to which extent they
are useful in
understanding the evolving use of groupware and informing its
design,
introduction and use.
This special issue will explore these questions in
more depth by reporting
on a variety of experiences, technical, empirical
and theoretical, that
illustrate and inform the issues and provide a
resource to CSCW researchers
and developers grappling with the issues of
the evolving use of groupware.

TOPICS OF INTEREST include, but are not
limited to:

- Longterm studies of evolving use of groupware
- New
theoretical frameworks for understanding appropriation processes
-
Comparison of different theoretical approaches
- Assessment of existing
theoretical approaches by means of case studies
- Implications for the
design of groupware
- Implications for the introduction, maintenance and
removal of groupware
