Yesterday a colleague told me (somewhat jokingly, i thought at the
time) that they believed that the police deliberately 'inflated' crime
rates at around this time in a government's term of office. Apparently,
party manifestos are being drafted and the police, eager to claim more
of the pie, exaggerate the amount of crime.
This morning i heard on BBC radio 4 that crime 'had risen'. They then
wheeled on Ann Widdicombe who said (amongst other things) that 'the
police must be allowed to do their job' - a plea for further funding?
Is this just a coincidence, or has my colleague hit the nail on the
head?
