International Workshop on Empirical Studies
of Software Maintenance (WESS 2000)

October 14, 2000
San Jose, CA
This workshop is co-located with:
International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM 2000)
International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2000)
Sponsored by IEEE Computer Society IEEE Technical Committee on Software
Engineering
What is WESS?
WESS is a small, interactive workshop for practitioners and researchers
interested in empirical aspects of software maintenance. Those interested in
attending are encouraged to submit a 2-5 page position paper which will be
peer reviewed. Papers should be sent to George Stark at [log in to unmask] or
[log in to unmask] PDF format is preferred.
Four previous WESS events have brought attention to the volume of work in
software maintenance including the design of experiments, ethics and research
conduct, and empirical results.
What are the objectives of WESS 2000?
The objectives of WESS 2000 are to build upon the results of the previous
four WESS workshops by promoting discussion and exchange of ideas among
researchers and practitioners, identifying practical problems and research
issues and sharing potential solutions. Specifically, WESS 2000 will address
the following questions:
* What metrics and models (and to what level of precision) can be applied
across maintenance releases, projects, or organizations? - Ned Chapin
* Can we combine the accumulated knowledge base into a Web-Based Lessons
Learned (WWLL) Repository? What are the requirements for a WWLL Repository
for Empirical Software Engineering Research? - Warren Harrison
* What key software maintenance areas should we be studying empirically? -
Linda Rosenberg
* Can we measure maintainability? If so, how? If not, why not? - Paul Oman
The results of each working group will be documented and presented to the
IEEE Software Engineering Standards Committee for evaluation as potential
projects.
