OOPS-142 Configurable Development Processes
John Cameron, Consulting and Integration (SCI) Competency Segment, IBM
The guidance that processes (methods) supply to projects has to be
flexible to be useful. The variety of projects is too great for one size
to fit all. A configurable approach to process guidance requires some
kind of modularity. Oversimplifying, you configure by selecting the
appropriate modules and fitting them together. IBM Global Services have
increasingly adopted a 'work product' approach in order to achieve better
integration and easier configuration. The key modules are 'work product
descriptions' each of which provides guidance centred on some document or
other project artefact.
This talk will explain the motivation and rationale for the work product
approach, and survey the work to date which includes process guidance for
a wide range of development and consulting engagements. We will describe
how to configure for a specific project and show how the configuration
technique is a simple yet powerful tool for planning a project. Finally
there will be some broader discussion of reuse in the context of process
guidance.
John Cameron has 25 years industry experience that includes a
specialisation in processes, methods and associated tools. He has
written, taught, deployed and used a variety of development and other
IT-related processes. He is an executive consultant in IBM Global
Services and is a past committee member of the OOPS group.
