Dear all
As you may have heard by now, the system that is used for the CPHC email
lists is being moved. To cut a long story short, mailbase at Newcastle
had to tender for a continuation of the service they have been running
for a long time, and they lost. The new providers will be a service
called jiscmail.
This changeover will take place over the coming weekend (25-26
November), though messages sent to the wrong address (see below) will be
forwarded to the correct one for some time to come.
Just to ensure that everyone on all of the lists has been correctly
copied over to jiscmail, I will send a copy of this email after the
transition to the corresponding email list at jiscmail. If you receive
this but fail to receive the second one, please email me at
[log in to unmask]
What does this change of address mean to you?
---------------------------------------------
The only obvious effect on everyone is that the CPHC email list
addresses will change with effect from Monday 27 November. Instead of
sending a message to [log in to unmask], from that date you will
need to send messages to [log in to unmask] Email sent to the old
address at mailbase will be automatically forwarded to the correct
address at jiscmail for you, but you should take the opportunity to
update your address books this weekend. You should receive a reminder of
the transfer if you send an email to mailbase after 26 November.
However, there are some effects that probably only a few of you will
want to know, and only if you are aware of extra facilities provided by
such software (such as temporary suspension of email service). If you
are in this category, read on, otherwise you can stop here.
The important information for those who need to know more than the above
is that the email server is changing. The one that will be in use at
jiscmail.ac.uk is LISTSERV, a well-known email server, and the commands
available to users for any LISTSERV server will be available to you.
More information (including a list of user commands) is available at
www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/jiscmail-guides.htm.
Fuller information about the change-over from mailbase to jiscmail
------------------------------------------------------------------
All mail sent to Mailbase over this weekend will be queued and forwarded
to JISCmail for distribution as soon as the JISCmail service starts
operating. No mail will be lost, but mail sent over that weekend may be
delayed by a day or two. Archives and Files up to the transition date
will be retained at Newcastle in a frozen state for an extended period
so that existing URLs which reference them will not break. Archives and
Files will also be transferred to JISCmail and will be maintained and
updated there after the transition date.
If you want more information, you might like to look at jiscmail's home
page at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/.
Regards
Steve
