Researching Widening Access: International Perspectives Conference
Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland
29 June - 1 July 2001
CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline - 30 October 2000
Conference Aims
The Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning (www.stir.ac.uk/ioe/crll)
invites contributions to an international conference on the theme of
Researching Widening Access: International Perspectives.
This conference has developed out of research, currently underway within
the Centre, on evaluating initiatives designed to widen access to further
and higher education. This research has a strong international dimension.
The conference is designed to review the issues which have emerged out of
research into widening access to education. This has been an important
theme of educational policy in many countries over a number of years, and
is receiving even more attention with the growing emphasis on lifelong
learning and social inclusion. We are inviting a number of leading figures
from the international research community to provide an analysis of the
issues which have emerged from research, or which the research community
should be addressing. It is planned that these keynote presentations will
be complemented by papers from a wide range of researchers. It is hoped
that the outcomes from the conference will provide critical and analytical
perspectives which will inform policy and practice in this field. In
addition to the conference proceedings, key papers will be published as a
conference report.
Keynote speakers
Confirmed keynote speakers include:
Professor David Boud, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia
Professor Peter Scott, Vice-Chancellor, Kingston University, UK
Professor Shirley Walters, University of Western Cape, Capetown, South Africa
Themes for the Conference will include:
* Access initiatives * Younger learners
* The experience of learning * Older learners
* Part time provision * Gender
* Developments in ICT * Community Learning

Background
The Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning is a joint initiative between
Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Stirling. It receives
core funding from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. The aim of
the Centre is to undertake a programme of research which will inform the
development of policy and provision in the field of lifelong learning.
Current or recent research projects involving staff from the Centre
include: the role of further education colleges in the provision of
lifelong learning; evaluating access initiatives in higher education;
mature students in higher education; work based learning; the role of ICT
in supporting learning. The centre also organises a regular series of
forums and seminars on lifelong learning, and produces publications,
including an annual Statistical Bulletin on Lifelong Learning. Staff from
the Centre are already involved in a wide range of co-operative activities
with colleagues in Europe, North America, Australia and South Africa. This
conference is designed to strengthen the international dimension of the
work of the Centre, and to deepen our understanding of issues associated
with widening access to lifelong learning.

The Venue and the City of Glasgow
The conference will be held in the City Campus of Glasgow Caledonian
University. The University began in 1874 as a small college with 110
students. Since then it has grown and diversified into one of the largest
universities in Scotland with over 14,000 students. The University is
located in a modern purpose built campus in the centre of the city of
Glasgow. Which has recently had over £45 million invested in the
development of new facilities including a new Health Faculty building, an
extension to the library and state of the art leisure facilities.
Glasgow is a vibrant post industrial city. It combines outstanding
Victorian architecture with many innovative modern buildings, and was
designated as the UK City of Architecture and Design in 1999. It has a
number of world class art collections in the Burrell, the Kelvingrove Art
Gallery and Museum, and the Gallery of Modern Art. The city has an
impressive range of high quality restaurants and bars, and a very lively
club scene for those with real staying power. Scotland's wonderful
mountains and lochs are within easy travelling distance, and the capital
city of Edinburgh can be reached in 45 minutes by train.
Other events
The timing for the conference has been planned to take into account two
other conferences which may be of relevance to delegates. The first is the
European Access Network (EAN) Conference which will be hosted by the
University of Glasgow on 25 -27 June 2001. The second will be the Standing
Council for University Teaching and Research into the Education of Adults
