Hello and welcome to the Continuing-Education list. This is a note from the

About the list
This list is for the exchange and dissemination of information regarding the
provision of continuing education in the HE sector. It is anticipated that

More Information
===========================================================
The UACE Administrators Network
Though its memberships are not the same, this list is intended to operate as
a
major communication channel of the UK's UACE Administrators's Network. More
information about the network can be found at
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/lifelong-learning/UACEAD/. However, anyone with a
genuine
professional interest in continuing-education is welcome, including
colleagues
from outside the UK.
===========================================================
Netiquette
===========================================================
Like any internet community, there are some general do's and don'ts of the
list.
Please don't write in upper case. THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING AND IS VERY
RUDE
If you feel strongly about something on the list, please wait before sending
off
your reply. The medium of email tends to encourage immediacy of response and
in
some situations, this can be unhelpful. You may think differently about your
reply fifteen minutes later
You can find a general guide to courteous behaviour when using the internet
at
There are some guidelines specific to this list:
Asking for information
===========================================================
One of the most common uses of the list has been for members to ask others
for
information about policies and practice in their own institutions. Having a
clear view about what is going on nationally is often useful in or informing
local discussion or resolving local problems. But answering so many surveys
takes time. The most efficient method of getting information is to ask
people to
reply off-list to you and then you can collate replies and post a summary to
the
list. (You can also ask the list-owners to make summaries available via the
list’s website) That way, everyone benefits, traffic is minimised and future
surveys are more likely to get responses. Equally, if you are interested in
the
result of a survey, then please take the time to answer yourself!
===========================================================
Replying
===========================================================
Please note that the default action (i.e. what will happen automatically
unless
you do something else) is for replies to go to the whole list. This means
that
if someone writes to the list, and you read their mail and choose reply,
your
reply will go to every member of the list and not just to the original
sender.
Therefore to avoid inconvenience to others, personal embarrassment, or legal
action!, always check who the message is going to when you reply to a
message,
and if necessary, delete the mailbase address and replace it with the
address of
the person who originally sent the message to mailbase. Also note that
everyone
makes mistakes sometimes (including the list owners!) so please just ignore
misaddressed mail of this kind.
===========================================================
Attachments
===========================================================
Viruses are so common today, that the list owners ask you not to send
attachments to the list. This applies especially to Microsoft Word files.
Generally speaking, it is not necessary to send word files as attachments.
The
content of the file can be included in the message as text. If you must send
use
a Word document, you have several options. In order of preference:
Ask members who want to read the file to contact you off-list.
Save the file as an HTML file (web page) and include a web address where
people
can find it
Send the attachment to one of the list -owners who will scan it for viruses
and
forward it to the list.
Remember, there are over 300 busy people who belong to this list. Putting a
virus on their machines, however inadvertently, will ruin their whole day.
You
will be seriously unpopular. For this reason, it is considered very uncool
to
send document (binary) attachments to the list.
===========================================================
Summary
===========================================================
Mind your reply options - don't send personal mail to the whole list
If you don't want to be very unpopular, don't use attachments
If you ask for information, ask for off-list replies and collate.
