Biomedical Information on the Internet
a one day hands-on training workshop

Everyone working in the broad fields of biomedicine and health care
will benefit from this informal, interactive full day workshop. The
Net offers an ever growing accumulation of free and priced
information. The course's unique combination of short presentations
and 'hands-on' training will help you discover the useful information
available on the Net - key resources you will want to return to time
after time.
The course will help participants to:
* Keep ahead of the phenomenal proliferation of medical and health
information on the Internet
* Learn how to get the best out of search engines, using the right
syntax for each search tool
* Understand key mailing lists and newsgroups to help you take
advantage of the Internet
* Explore top biomedical sites and portals, and learn how they can
help you save time in searching
* Discover how the Internet versions of key databases, such as
MEDLINE, differ from CD-ROM and online versions.
Who should attend
The course is suitable for anyone with a basic knowledge of Internet
applications. The emphasis is on searching the World Wide Web.

The speaker
The course is taught by Alain Besson, Medical Systems Librarian at St.
Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Alain is a librarian with several years' experience of the Internet.

Sources of Health Care Information

This one day course is designed to introduce researchers and
information workers to a wide range of UK national health care
sources. Sources of Health Care Information is ideal for anyone who
needs a basic introduction to the types of data available and to
information searching techniques. Now more than ever, being able to
get accurate and up to date information about health is essential,
sometimes even critical.
Whether you need to search for yourself or on behalf of others, this course
will help you.
Topics covered include: UK medical and health care administration and
policy; consumer health care information; clinical medicine; evidence
based medicine; nursing information and using the Internet to find
medical information.
The course will help participants to:
* Pinpoint the sources of most use in their work
* Discover sources in related areas of medicine and health care
* Understand how the world of medical information is likely to change
in the new Millennium.

The speakers
The course leader is Bruce Madge of the British Library's Health Care
Information Service. He is a medical librarian with many years'
experience. He is assisted by colleagues from the library and from
other organisations.
