Women's Health Queensland Wide (Australia) is currently running a program of
videoconferenced health education seminars designed to give Queensland
women in rural and remote locations access to similar services to those
enjoyed by women around Brisbane. The seminars cover topics that concern
women in their middle years and feature a range of speakers, including a
gynaecologist, dietician, herbalist and breast specialist. Up to 13
remote sites participate in each monthly seminar, with women being given
plenty of opportunity to ask questions of the speakers. The program uses
the facilities of the Queensland Telemedicine Network but is run
independently by WHQW.
We've done extensive literature searching but we can find nothing
published that suggests that other organisations have already done this.
We think we may be the first to run a health education program via
videoconference and our experiences have demonstrated that this method
brings its own challenges.
We are interested in talking to other service providers who might be
thinking of trying this approach or who would like to know more about both
our program and audience feedback results. We are also keen to hear from
anyone who has already used videoconferencing in educational activities
for consumer, rather than health professional, audiences.
