To add a little to what Richard said, as part of the
"internationalization"
of Fortran, F2K will support UNICODE and ASCII, with an intrinsic
called selected_char_kind() which takes the name of the character
set you want and returns a kind parameter.
Well, Richard _did_ say "currently" ;-)
Note that, e.g., system calls on Windows come in two flavors, one
ascii and one unicode, with the ascii promised to be depreciated
sometime.
