<Rant -- Sort of hobby-horse>
It is sad that this mailserver and the other newsgroups I follow
(comp.lang.fortran and sci.math.num-analysis), but particularly this one, are
being infiltrated by two things. **I want** a free compiler, and "help me with
my homework" (well no, "do my homework for me" is more like the normal
request/demand -- not the person who I have quoted). It makes one very chary of
reading any request for help.
Over in comp.os.vms (via, to me, a listserver), there was a recent thread from a
young guy asking for ages of the group. I know that several "over there" are
also here. The regulars seem to be 40's and 50's.
O.K., I'm a bit of a dinosaur -- 55 and programming Fortran since the 1960's. I
am seeing that many of us old (elderly?) and even middle aged are having
problems with F95 and undoubtedly more problems will come with F2k.
However, to revert, I feel glad that the internet was not available to me in
respect of asking for answers (not research -- yeah, I just wish), when I did my
stuff. Obviously the temptation is too great.
Will we end up with a plethora of Ph.D's who graduated because they knew the
right newsgroup to write to? Hmm, I'm starting to feel the "un-merit" of my
qualifications already.
<End rant>

Either "\'" or "\s" (to escape the apostrophe) seems to work for most people,
but that little whizz-bang apostrophe gives me little spam.
