Well, StopWatch is undoubtly a very nice and useful module, and I am
actually about to adopt it for my HPF needs. But it is merely a
collection of timing tools which have nothing to do with the compiler
optimization issues we have been discussing.
In any case, thanks for the advice to all. I think I am going to follow
the advice to switch optimization off (-O0) for the caller routine. I
can't think of a compiler that would be that smart even at -O0 level. It
will also introduce my students to compiler optimization switches and
such...
