The fact that it's still in the standard may have something to do with
that. It can't be removed from the standard until some general form
of exception handling is included. The standard document's
suggested replacement for alternate return (which is present
because the feature is on the obsolescent featurers list) is about
as good an argument in favor of keeping the feature in the language
as can be made.
