Dear all,
after reading the long sequel about symbols in FORTRAN
I noticed that there was a comment by a portuguese colleague
about using the "^" symbol that seems passed unnoticed.
A similar situation occurs with keyboards in spanish and the
situation is rather worse since there are sevaral kinds of
keyboards which place the "^" symbol in a different place.
Here in Mexico I had to deal with three different kinds. Some use
the shift+ combination, other the alt+ and other the alt gray+
combination.
The worst thing is when you don't get what you want
but the "^" symbol appears as an accent. I guess this situation
also occurs in other eastern Europe languages. However,
the "*" is _always_ at the same place in the numeric keypad.
The search for the "^" becomes, unconsciously, sometimes
anoying when I work with Matlab for instance.
Besides, the suggested use of a preprocessor is a nice solution
for us programming gurus who want to use the "^" symbol and
have the right keyboard.
