There is another reason for keeping "**" as the symbol for exponentiation in
Fortran. When I type "b^a" in my keyboard I get "bâ" because in Portuguese
and in many other languages "^" is the accent named circunflex. The same is
true for "~" (tilde) , "'" (acute) and "`" (grave), which are also accents
in Portuguese and in place of "b~a", "b'a" and "b`a" I get "bã", "bá" and
"bà" . This is the reason why these symbols are present in the keyboards.
