Where scratch files are written is probably system dependent. They could be
anywhere, or even possibly nowhere (in memory).
The system that I use puts scratch files into my login area. However, they are
probably not accessible during a run as they are probably locked by your other
process.
Try duplicating the scratch file to another IO unit, and use anything on your
system which may allow reads whilst the file is being written to. Not sure if
there is a standard way of doing this, and a bit too late to check it. Others
(e.g. RM) will tell you if this is part of the standard.

Either "\'" or "\s" (to escape the apostrophe) seems to work for most people,
but that little whizz-bang apostrophe gives me little spam.
