Peter,
Your example certainly manages to defeat our memory allocation/deallocation
scheme very nicely. We have found that not immediately returning memory to
the system using free() can be a big performance win on some code. We are
exploring options for fixing your problem without losing the performance gain
across the board and will make a patch available on our ftp site when
we come up with a solution.
