Unfortunately, there is NO standard way to call OS commands from within a fortran program. Yes, the
SYSTEM subroutine is supported by many Fortran vendors and it has almost exactly the same semantics on every
system where it is supported.
HOWEVER, the SYSTEM subroutine is NOT part of the Fortran standard. As of now, and for Fortran 2000,
there is not and will not be any standard way of executing an OS command from a Fortran program.
