1. re execution of O/S commands from within Fortran this is still not standard
(at least through F95). I would suggest the following approach. Call this a
wrapper subroutine, say FORTRAN_SYSTEM and write this subroutine for each
platform / compiler / operating system that you're using. This is a lot
better than inserting a call to RUNQQ in the middle of say a LAPACK routine.
2. I am sorry to bring you the bad news but your PC is inadequate. I do not
know of any major vendor with a product that will even run in your
configuration (perhaps Lahey Express may run...) I would suggest buying a
used PC or building a cheap one on your own by buying the necessary parts.
