Depending on the declaration of a1 (which you didn't show),
that doesn't necessarily follow. If a1 was some type that used, say
16 bytes per element, then you'd be darned close to your 2gb. A
16-byte real, or a complex composed of two 8-byte reals would do that.
Or, of course, a derived type could be just about any size.
Afraid I don't know sysadmin-type details for the HP.
