By PC, I specifically mean a Wintel machine. I have source code and
a makefile for a research code which I would like to install on my
home PC. The main problem is that my compiler's make utility (Absoft
f90) is, in the words of an Absoft tech support person, "a little
brain dead." He doubted that Absoft's make() would be able to handle
some of the more esoteric parts of the makefile. I verified that.
:-(
I don't want to decipher the makefile and do things manually if I
can at all avoid it. I'm left with the option of hoping somebody
ported gnumake to the Wintel platform. Has anybody done that? Or is
there some other approach I haven't thought of?

PS I wanted to mention how impressed I have been over time with the
level of expertise I have found in this mailing list. It has helped
enormously in my doctoral research, and I thank everyone.
