Clive,
Concerning your effort to suscribe some time ago, I believe we've heard
this sad tale before, and there are now other ways to suscribe, as you well
know.
On your more substantial point about electronic media, you are of
course correct. In fact, each time a new issue of Fortran Forum is
announced on the Internet, someone asks why it can't be accessed
electronically. This has, in fact, been a source of concern to the ACM for
all its print publications, and so:
· it has been agreed to fund digitization of all ACM journals and
magazines, back to the beginning (1940);
· it has been agreed to fund, individually or, in a few cases,
collectively, all conference proceedings (pre-1991) and all SIG newsletters
(including Fortran Forum).
This represents a commitment of over $425,000, in addition to the
substantial funds already spent to initiate ACM's Digital Library and to
stock it with journals and conference proceedings from 1990 onwards.
The publications staff is working hard to get all this material into the
Digital Library. The journals are going well, and the conferences from 1985
onwards should be complete by June. The earlier proceedings and the
newsletters will be digitized starting in the summer.
Thus, in the near future, all ACM publications will be accessible in
digital form. Keep an eye on http://www.acm.org/dl for details.
Hope this helps,
Mike
