Well, I'd rather say that there's no point in replying to somebody posting
the question alone. Others on the list *might* also benefit if it's
posted on the list. And that is the reason for keeping the archives.

I'll give you three examples where I haven't seen this:
(1) Turbulence mailing list. (On the JISCMAIL server itself)
(2) Pine discussion forum (at the university of washington)
(3) TeX Users Group
Moreover, if you browse through the archives of any list on linux then
you'll find that the behavior that you want is not (never) the default.
