Present a one-day conference
CHILDREN AND MEDIA -
OUT OF CONTROL OR TAKING CHARGE?
MARCH 9TH 2000
Are the electronic media destroying childhood - or are they liberating
children from adult control?
Should we be trying harder to protect children - or can we help them to
take charge of the new media environment?
What rights do children have as media consumers, and as citizens of the
digital age?
Concern about the influence of the media on children is perennial. Yet with
each new media technology - video, computer games, the internet - the
anxiety seems to intensify. New legislation and new technical devices
appear to offer the possibility of greater control; but many have argued
that such control is merely an illusion.
Meanwhile, more positive views of children's relationships with the media
have begun to emerge. Children, it is argued, are no longer passive victims
of the media. On the contrary, they are part of a new 'digital generation':
they are in charge of their relationships with media, and they need the
chance to express their views.
This intensive one-day conference will be of interest to media producers,
regulators, policy-makers, researchers and all those concerned with
children's welfare. We will look at the latest research into the child
audience; debate the future of media regulation; and discuss the
possibilities for children to become producers of media in their own right.
SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE:
Andrea Millwood Hargrave (Broadcasting Standards Commission)
Martin Barker (University of Sussex)

Isobel Reid (Independent Television Commission)
Damien Tambini (Institute of Public Policy Research)
