CURRENT EXHIBITION
The World of Lisa Hendricks

A bright and colourful collection of paintings by a graphic artist whose
life spans periods in Uganda, Nigeria, England, and now Jamaica, where her
heart and soul are resident in Portland. The exhibition will run until 10
June.

A Reading From Colin Channer

Jamaica Blue welcomes one of Jamaica's most successful writers, Colin
Channer, best selling author of Waiting in Vain, published by Random House.
Time Out New York Book of the Summer, Waiting in Vain catapulted Colin
Channer to the top of the Blackboard Seller List in the US and its success
has taken him all over that country. Just arrived in London, he appears
tonight at Jamaica Blue with guest poet Bernardine Evaristo, author of Lara,
Daily Telegraph and New Statesman Book of the Year Award winner and Best
Book at the EMMA Awards 1999.

Take Control of Your Life

The first of two free personal empowerment workshops in June, presented by
Sandra Richards, a development professional with a master's degree in
education, further qualifications in the field of development and almost 20
years personal business experience. The workshops aim to provide a strategy
for taking control of your life and career. All are welcome.

MAGIC HAPPENS

Open Mic

Your second opportunity to grace the stage at Jamaica Blue this week, as the
Open Mic moves to its new regular Friday night slot. Poets, musicians,
singers and ventriloquists are invited, among others.

Productions, to present a weekly Saturday night Gospel Show. Offering a mix
of well-known and unknown talent, with an open mic section and an open
invitation for the whole audience to sing, so bring your voice. Musical and
general direction by Alex Douglas.

International Jazz All Day

Featuring, from approximately 6.30 pm, the Sunday jam session, this week led

Downbeat

On Wednesday nights, Jamaica Blue provides a platform for exceptional new
talent and Downbeat, organised by mercurial drummer Toby Goodman, tonight
comprises a band set, followed by a jam featuring some of the finest
emerging players around. If you are talent scout, be there. A crossover of
Jazz, Soul, Funk and R&B.

EXHIBITION LAUNCH

Paul Blackwood

Specialising in landscapes depicting day-to-day life in Jamaica, Paul
Blackwood has flown to London for two reasons: to exhibit his work at The
Jamaican High Commission from 31 May to 7 June - and then to exhibit at
Jamaica Blue until 17 June. Catch it in one place or the other and meet the
Artist at Jamaica Blue this evening.

INTERNET FORUM

To Webcast or Not to Webcast

All those with an interest in putting out live audio and video on the
internet are invited to join an exploratory discussion, which will examine
the feasibility of conducting a collective webcast experiment from Jamaica
Blue, utilising the ISDN line we have recently installed. The meeting will
be chaired by Geoffrey Holland, Jamaica Blue's Managing Director, and all
forms of technical and creative input are invited.

THE ESCOFFERY SISTERS

Kindred Spirit

This supremely talented gospel vocal group make a welcome return to Jamaica
Blue and we apologise in advance to all those who will not be able to get
in. The last show here by The Escoffery Sisters was beyond packed and we can
only suggest that you come early if you want to be sure of a seat.

(Also, from 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm, Sandra Richards, international agent for
African American Women on Tour - AAWOT - will have a corner display table in
the adjacent room at Jamaica Blue, where she will answer questions about the

Lessons in Loving

The final evening seminar by Jennifer Joseph of The Optimistic Training and
Life Maintenance Consultancy, which this time addresses commitment and
family issues within relationships. Jennifer Joseph is recognised as one of
the leading trainers on the personal development circuit and is a qualified
relationships facilitator. This welcoming workshop meets by the fireplace at
Jamaica Blue.

JAMAICA BLUE SHOWCASE

Featuring Urban Groove

Onto the Wednesday night platform for exceptional new music steps Urban
Groove. Anyone who has heard this very funky Jazzy young band play will
attest to the fact that they could be on the verge of great things if they
find the backing they deserve, so will someone please sign them and nurture
their talent. Phil, Kofi, Neil and Alexis hit you with vocals, keyboards,
bass and drums, respectively.

Diabetes - Who is at Risk?

On 29 May, Diabetes UK (formerly The British Diabetic Association), the
country's leading diabetes charity, published a startling new report:
Diabetes in the UK - The Missing Million. This highlights the fact that up
to 1 million people in the UK are living, undiagnosed, with diabetes, a
condition which can lead to limb amputation, blindness, heart disease and
kidney failure. Who is at risk? Are you? This week, during National Diabetes
Week, Thursday Forum is organised by Diabetes UK and its Project Manager,
Tessa Griffiths, will be here to present the facts and answer questions.

Opening to Spirit

With Caroline Shola Arewa, Master of Yoga, Polarity Therapy practitioner and
international workshop leader, whose book, Opening to Spirit, is a study of
the spirituality and mythology of West Africa, Egypt and India. In this
short presentation, Shola will introduce the work of Inner Visions, her
centre for spiritual and personal development, which aims to bring inner
peace and fulfilment to everyday living.

Your weekly opportunity to perform on the Jamaica Blue stage in another

The Art of Richard Lopez

Richard's distinctive blend of studio photography and painting have resulted
in his work becoming highly sought after by private collectors and galleries
alike. A former student of the Chelsea School of Art, he rose to become one
of the top photographic retouchers in the country and now works both from
home in West Sussex and in London. He will be at Jamaica Blue tonight and
his work will remain here until 1 July.

The Future of Montserrat and its People

Since the first rumblings of the Soufriere Hills volcano in Montserrat in
July 1995, the Island has experienced the complete destruction of its
southern and eastern sections (including the capital city, Plymouth) and the
relocation of approximately two-thirds of its population either to other
Caribbean islands, the UK or North America. Nearly five years on, this
forum, will focus on the future of the Island and its inhabitants. Speakers
include Polly Patullo, journalist and author of the book Fire From the
Mountain - the Tragedy of Montserrat and the Betrayal of its People),
Gertrude Shott, Institute of Education, London, Martin Lever, Department of
Geography, University of Manchester, and Janice Panton, representative of
the Montserrat Government in the UK. This evening's event is organised by
The Institute of Commonwealth Studies.

In association with The Gleaner, the only Jamaican newspaper published in
the UK, Jamaica Blue tonight offers you the opportunity to question the only
Jamaican-born Member of Parliament: Diane Abbott, MP, Labour Member for
Hackney North and Stoke Newington. Members of the press will be invited and
the interview will be published in The Gleaner and may be broadcast. Due to
the need for a prompt start, the audience are requested to take their seats
by 7.00 pm.

THE WEST END LAUNCH OF

NO GLOVES, NO LOVE

book, themed around the gladiatorial sport of boxing and written by leading
Sports writer, Ron Shillingford. With his intimate knowledge of the subject,
borne of many years in the company of world champions, Ron Shillingford
really enters the heavyweight league with No Gloves, No Love. Tonight at
Jamaica Blue, he will be reading extracts in his inimitable style and
signing copies. Be here if you like a good book launch because this one is a
knockout.
