Channel 4 Black and Asian History Map
Channel 4 has launched a major online initiative to put the history of black
and Asian people in the UK on the map. 
The Black and Asian History Map, on the Channel 4 website, will link to the
sites of projects all over the UK. Historical societies, schools, youth
groups and individuals are invited to investigate their local black history
and register their projects.
'Every contribution is welcome,' says Paula Snyder, editor of Programme
Support at Channel 4. 'We are as keen to document the reality of everyday
lives as we are to record significant achievements.'
The web is the perfect medium for the initiative, allowing participants to
control their own projects and create unique websites that form part of a
much bigger whole. Those with little or no experience of the web will be
helped to develop their sites. The aim is to build the map by October 2000.
Channel 4 welcomes contributions:
*	from anyone who has some knowledge of the web and html and would be
prepared to donate time to help others with their sites. This is a great
opportunity for budding web designers to get some experience and participate
in a major Channel 4 project
*	from anyone who would like to pursue a local project themselves (or
who knows someone who might, or who is already involved in a suitable
project)
Many groups and individuals are already working on projects and some
websites have already been completed. At www.greenwich.gov.org (look for
'Black History' in the A-Z), for example, you can find a history of black
people in the Greenwich area, covering black sailors, black communities,
slavery, personalities and more. At http://www.furd.org/arthur/index.html,
you can read the story of Arthur Wharton, the first professional black
footballer.
Examples of other projects in progress include: local research going back as
far as 1603 by students at Brockworth School in Gloucester; a look at the
influence of black American music imported by sailors into Liverpool; a site
about a black travelling musician and salesman at the turn of the century;
and a historical study of black people in military and nursing careers.
