Research Fellowships
Program on Globalization, Culture, and Social Transformation
Universidad Central de Venezuela
A Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships in the Humanities Program.
This Program is dedicated to studying the importance of the cultural
dimension in socio-political processes, promoting the development of
transdisciplinary focuses, and more especially theorizing about the
importance of social representations in social change processes and
how in the current times of globalization certain types of social
representations that play significant roles in both expressing the
purpose and meaning of the practices of social movements and
organizations are produced in contexts of intense exchanges between
local and global agents.
On the basis of case studies, information shall be generated regarding
these types of transnational processes, and there shall be an enrichment
and enhancement of the fields of the theory of social representations
and globalization processes.
Each of the three years of the Fellowship Program shall be dedicated to
studying cases of the social production of representations articulated
around a particular set of socially and politically significant ideas:
2001-2002: representations of cultural, ethnical, and/or racial identities
and differences.
2002-2003: representations of citizenship, civil society, and social
participation.
2003-2004: representations of environment, biodiversity, and sustainable
development.
The diversity of reference subjects for the types of social representations
to be examined shall contribute to theorizing in a more comprehensive
manner about social representations and their importance in social change
processes within the framework of globalization processes, transcending
the limitations that could be entailed by studying instances pertaining
to a more reduced thematic spectrum.
The Program is oriented toward creating opportunities for research, access
to information, and the formation of work networks for intellectuals with
research experience, especially those whose work is directly or indirectly
related to the topics and interests of Latin American social movements and
organizations that promote transformations aimed to correcting systems of
exclusion, discrimination, and social injustice that affect particular
population groups.
The Program shall accept four Junior Fellows per year, two each semester
(September-December and February-April). Fellows shall have a work and
computer space at the Program offices.
The residency of each of these fellows shall be three months, during
which they shall devote themselves to their own research projects and
they shall participate in an ongoing seminar together with the members
of the host Program Research Team and other UCV professors and Masters
and Doctoral dissertators. In addition, they shall make a public
presentation of their research.
At the end of each of the years of the Program, a Colloquium shall be
held (3 days in length) which is open to the public, at which the
following shall present their work: the four Junior Fellows
for the year, three Senior Fellows (selected from among international
recognized specialists in the field who are members of the Program's
International Advisory Network), members of the permanent Program Research
Team, and representatives of social organizations related to the topic for
the year. At the end of this Colloquium, the four Junior Fellows, the three
Senior Fellows, and the members of the Program Research Team shall jointly
hold a Workshop (five days in length) dedicated to an intensive discussion
of their research.
Revised versions of the papers presented by Fellows and other participants
in each of those annual events shall be included in a book for each annual
event.
Candidates from all over the world are welcome, without any restriction
regarding nationality or country of residence. Nevertheless, due to
practical reasons the working languages of the Program are Spanish and
Portuguese. Proposals and the Research Paper to be presented at the end
of the fellowship residency must be written in anyone of these languages.
