The next five years
* Assessing the UK/Cuba relationship -
Britain's relationship with Cuba has broadened dramatically over the past 5
years. In order to build on this the Cuba Initiative is organising a seminar
in London on 5th and 6th December, to assess the present nature of this
relationship and the prospects for its future development over the next 5
years.
The Rt Hon the Baroness Young DL, in her capacity as Chair of the UK side of
the Cuba Initiative will chair the event and Sr Ricardo Cabrisas, Minister
of Government and International Relations, will lead a delegation of up to
30 from Cuba to participate in the seminar. Sr Cabrisas, Chairs the steering
group of the Cuba Initiative on the Cuban side.
Whilst the agenda will focus during the first day on trade and investment
issues it will also explore the broader UK/Cuba relationship with particular
reference to NGOs, education, health, scientific research and the regions.
The conference will also consider changes in Cuba's relations with other
parts of the world and the Caribbean region and how this might modify
Britain's relationship. Up to 250 participants are expected, consisting
mainly of representatives from government, parliament, private sector,
academics, NGOs, local government, trade unions and national institutions.
The Seminar celebrates the 5th anniversary of the Cuba Initiative.
NOTES
The Cuba Initiative founded five years ago aims to significantly strengthen
trade and investment relations between Britain and Cuba by providing
information and assistance to UK companies. Its steering group in the UK and
in Cuba are chaired respectively by the Rt Hon Baroness Young DL and Sr
Ricardo Cabrisas, Minister with Cabinet rank. The initiative provides an
official link between the UK private sector and Cuba's Ministry of Foreign
Trade. Whilst, the principal focus of the initiative is on trade and
investment, steering group membership is wider and includes NGOs, UK
government departments, academics and Members of Parliament and relates to
all aspects of non governmental relations between Britain and Cuba.
