Thanks for this very useful forward about the Black and Asian History Map.
The material remains of historic ethnic identities are of great importance
to the growing discipline of later historical archaeology - and constitute a
unique source of information about otherwise untold histories. At present,
the heritage management of sites which may hold such information and
archaeological research into these themes are being carried out in relative
isolation from colleagues in other disciplines.
In this light, any perspectives from list members (comments or criticisms)
on my recent paper _Ethnicity, Race and the Archaeology of the Atlantic
Slave Trade_, now online at http://www.shef.ac.uk/~assem/5/hicks.html
would be welcome. In particular, the theoretical issues raised by the recent
experience in Bristol of trying to acknowledge the multicultural heritage of
the slaving city are discussed.
Best wishes,
