Economic Analysis methods read the following and reply to me (Wendy
Olsen) so I can help coordinate an application from the AHE group that
had such a successful conference this week.

Below please see the ESRC's guideline URGING groups like us to apply
for funds.

However note that I am probably already going to be involved in 2 other
workhsps during 2001 so we need an AHE WORKSHOP COORDINATOR to take
this on. Ring me (number below) to get details of the scheme. I will
be happy to teach on the workhsop but would prefer it to be at a venue
elsewhere in UK.

NonUK nationals can of course go to the Workshops but they need to be
registered UK PhD 2nd-4th year students to ge t the funding.

ESRC RESEARCH TRAINING DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES (TDA) 2001
EXTRACT: Guidance Notes for Applicants

1. Background to the scheme

In July 1997, a proposal to invite Learned Societies to submit
applications for advanced research training events was approved by the
ESRC Training Board. The Board agreed to support 8 applications in
December 1997, 11 in December 1998 and 11 in December 1999.

There is now an opportunity for those that did not apply or who
were unsuccessful last year to apply in 2000. The Board wishes to
extend the range of events supported and the organisations putting
forward proposals. The scheme is not therefore limited to learned
societies in the social sciences and other organisations are encouraged
to put forward applications for funding. The Board is also willing to
consider supporting student-lead events and training activities
directed towards supervisors rather than students. However, all
applications for TDA funding should be made on a non-profit making
basis. Please note that Departments or other units within a Higher
Education Institution may not apply in their own right.

The following Notes have been updated from last year to help applicants
to meet the ESRC's requirements for the scheme.

2. ESRC requirements

Advanced research training

2.1 The priority for TDA support is on 'advanced' research
training. Events should build on and take further, but not replicate,
the training requirements outlined in the ESRC Postgraduate Training
Guidelines (1996). The ESRC considers provision of the training
outlined in these Guidelines to be the responsibility of individual
academic institutions and departments for provision in the first or
foundation year of a research student's PhD study. Many students will
require further training as they advance in their studies "to cover
specialist and continuing training needs" (B1.1.3). Not all Higher
Education Institutions (HEIs) might have the necessary resources or
level of expertise available to provide such specialist training. Such
provision has the potential to build on HEI research training to meet
the ESRC Guidelines but not duplicate it.

2.2 Activities providing advanced training will be expected to address
methodological and technical research-based knowledge, skills,
understandings and related issues situated in the disciplines or
subject areas within the social sciences. In general, the ESRC is
prepared to consider training activities as 'advanced' if they are
directed towards or based upon:

i) advances in the sophistication and rigour of existing ways of
thinking about or conducting research in a particular subject,
discipline or interdisciplinary area;
ii) advances effected by the incorporation of new ways of combining
well tried and trusted traditional approaches in one area with those in
another; iii) advances brought about by the need to adopt and adapt
existing approaches to new or changing purposes, situations, or
circumstances.

However, applications which do not provided advanced training
but which offer other benefits to the participants will also be
considered provided that these benefits are clearly explained.
