New US Co-op MA Program in Web Design To Be Offered Fall 2000
This fall the School of the Arts at Maharishi University of
Management will offer a new co-operative program in the Master
of Arts in Digital Media that will focus on web site design.
As part of the program, students are placed in a job with a U.S.
company designing websites. All expenses for the program are
covered by students’ earnings.
"Students in this program will dive deeply into the graphic and
artistic aspects of web design," says program director Gurdy
Leete. They will have an opportunity to develop their skills in
diverse areas, including web page layout, typography, video for
the web, 3-D animation for the web, HTML and Javascript coding,
and web server configuration.
The program starts with eight months of full-time study in the
digital media program on campus. During these months of full-time
study, students receive on-campus housing, meals, and a monthly
stipend. After the eight months of on-campus study, the
University then helps to arrange the students’ employment with a
U.S.-based company. The remaining courses of study are taken
through part-time distance education during evenings or weekends
over the period of about a year, while students are working at
their new jobs. Students pay their educational costs from their
job earnings, so that no payment is required in advance.
"The web has grown from 130 sites in June of 1993 to over a
billion web pages now," says Mr. Leete. "We think there are
great opportunities for talented art students to do wonderful
things in this spectacularly expansive field."
Admission requirements for the program include an undergraduate
art degree and a strong portfolio of art. Prior computer
experience is not mandatory, but applicants will need to
demonstrate aptitude for computer programming on a standardized
test.
