Digital Image Collections for Teaching and Learning
The JISC Image Digitization Initiative (JIDI) has been working for the
past three years to produce digital image collections scholarly use. I was
involved as the art & design subject co ordinator in selecting the art and
design, special collections that have been recently digitised and they
include
1. A E Halliwell & the Basic Design collections, Bretton Hall,
Wakefield
The London Institute:
2. London College of Fashion Collection
3. Central St Martins Teaching Collection
4. AAVAA, The African & Asian Visual Artist Archive, University of
East London
The JIDI team have also been working closely with the appropriate JISC
services for digitization, including the Technical Advisory Service for
Images (TASI), the Higher Education Digitization Service (HEDS), and the
Visual Arts Data Service (VADS). The JIDI team has worked out in detail
all the processes attendant upon digital imaging, and has documented these
fully. Most documentation is available from the TASI web site at
http://www.tasi.ac.uk.
(We) the JIDI team are now looking to extend the collections
available, in particular where these could be most appropriate for
teaching and learningin art & design. We are considering putting together
a further bid to JISC under its Distributed National Electronic Resource
(DNER) call for proposals (see document 5/99 on the JISC web site at
http://jisc.ac.uk, Whats new? Section). We are seeking partners for this
bid, and if you are interested in joining this bid, we would be most
grateful if you could answer the questions below in as much detail as is
possible without excessive research, Approximate answers are acceptable at
this stage. We would rather have rapid answers than complete ones.
1. Would you be interested in participating in this initiative?
2. What collection would you like to put forward?
3. Roughly how many images are there?
4. What is the copyright situation? If it is a problem, do you have the
resources to resolve this?
5. What catalogue do you have? It would be useful if you could give us a
sample entry.
6. What are your reasons for selecting these images?
7. What digitization or project management experience can you draw upon?
8. What institutional support could you provide for a possible
digitization project?
9. How would you see this collection being used in teaching and learning
a) locally and b) nationally?
10. We would appreciate any other information that you think appropriate.
Please return as soon as possible to (me)
