Posts for 2 Research Assistants
Sidewinder Project
Edinburgh College of Art has been awarded a Research Grant from the Arts
and Humanities Research Board for a joint 3-year research project with
EdVEC (Edinburgh Virtual Environment Centre), University of Edinburgh, to
develop three-dimensional haptic and multi-sensory computer applications
for creative processes in applied arts and design. The third partner is
Reachin Technologies AB of Stockholm, Sweden.
The aim of the research is to improve working practices and aid intuitive
development of ideas and to develop applications and virtual handtools
within existing 3D software programmes.
This exciting project requires two research assistants to work with a team
to produce an information resource on haptic and multi-sensory
perceptions, supporting applied artists, designers and other researchers,
and to develop viable software applications and virtual handtools to
enhance the creative practice of applied artists.
Further aims of the project are
to explore the potential advantages of being able to work, think and
respond to physical and visual stimuli, in a virtual, fully
three-dimensional, non-gravity context, with particular reference to the
education of designers and artists and the development of 3 dimensional
work
to discover the degrees of haptic and other multi-sensory feed back
required within digital systems to assist designers and artists to work
more intuitively.
Applications are invited from post-graduates (or equivalent level) for the
following 3 year fixed term contracts to start September 2000:
Research Assistant (1) based at Edinburgh College of Art
Research Assistant (2) based at EdVEC
Starting salary: 16,286
Applications to be received by July 28th 2000. Candidates should send a CV
and description of motivations with the names and addresses of two
referees to:

Interviews will be held on 22nd and 23rd August 2000.
The successful candidate, Research Assistant 1, to be based within the
Design, Applied Arts and Sculpture Schools at Edinburgh College of Art,
will have an understanding of hand skills in the arts and applied arts,
the design process, CAD/Computer Solid Modelling, and good oral and
written communication skills in the English language. S/he will be willing
to develop practical knowledge in the research area and be able to work
individually on the collection of data, questionnaires and surveys, and in
a team, for the successful delivery of the project in its three phases
(identification of multi-sensory perceptions, development of data to
support work on software and computer interfaces, and the evolution of
novel techniques and environments).
For informal discussion about the project by potential candidates for RA1
prior to applying, please contact Ann Marie Shillito, (Project Award
Holder), Research Fellow in Design and Applied Arts, Edinburgh College of
Art. Tel: 0131 221 6232. Fax: 0131 221 6004 (away from 19th to 23rd July).

The successful candidate, Research Assistant 2, for the development of the
Reachin System and virtual environments, based at EdVEC, should be a
computer scientist with 3D based knowledge and the programming languages
of C++ (low level) and Python Scripting.
S/he will have good oral and written communication skills in the English
language, be willing to develop practical knowledge in the research area,
and be able to work individually and in a team, for the successful
delivery of the project in its phases (user centred development of
Reachin, transference of multi-sensory perception data to computer
interfaces, and the evolution of novel techniques and environments).
For informal discussion about the project by potential candidates for RA2
prior to applying, please contact Dr Mark Wright <[log in to unmask]>.
