What a quiet little list this is!
In this peaceful place, let me mention 'H.D.' I've just been reading her
'Trilogy' for the first time today (Carcanet have it in print).
I'm impressed - she's a bit like Kathleen Raine, but not so lacking in
dynamic, and somewhat reminiscent of the fearsome Edith Sitwell, but precise
whereas the Sitwell is wordy, bombastic and hot-air inflated. There is a
certain crankiness about her, and she tends to a rather hieratic priestess
of tone, yet there's that authentic of inner articulation. Certainly I'd say
the poem sequence bears with the best of the stuff of the London blitz, with
the Four Quartets and Dylan at his finest hours.
Any opinions, deeper thoughts (mine being first impressions)
David Bircumshaw
(can't think of anything controversial to say)
