Could it be that these were available in the States as well? I remember
the very same series, in particular a poem by Wole Soyinka. These were
surely the first books of poetry I read with any interest after
discovering e. e. cummings, unless one counts such dreck as printed
song lyrics by Cat Stevens.
I once made an "anthology" of favorite poems to read aloud on car
trips--the same impulse that leads me to make trip-tapes of favorite
songs. I'm sorry that THAT kind of collection is so little in evidence
these days. Anthologies are no longer treasuries, but statements, or
maps, or pedagogical tools.
I notice that music compilations suffer from no such burden.
Apologetic anthologists who feel they are doing something worthwhile
but impossible should just stop.
