- well, in default of a statement from P himself we can only surmise.
...
Any musician knows that to perform is to TAKE
choices on a time line, i.e. to cut out other (potential) readings.
That's bloody difficult for me, and I guess could be for anyone else.
Blee. I struggling.
I'm an outlier here, I know - my central practice isn't poetry (except insofar
as poetry's covered by Wm Forsythe's umbrella definition of choreography,
though choreography isn't quite my central practice either).
But I have worked, and still do, as a musician from time to time, and am
completely in thrall to the very supportive idea that a partial reading
doesn't do anything to make other readings available both to performer and
audience at another time. It can't be any other way, resistance ist futile,
that way meltdown lies.
Interesting circularity in your reply - my eagerness to 'surmise' about JHP
and your reluctance to do so would seem to be a variation on the same theme.
Of course you look honourable and I look crass; which I suppose I shouldn't
mind - again, other readings are available...
Putting that aside, could you (or some like mind) bear to tease out the
constituents of the 'difficulty'? I'd honestly like very much to understand
better your position. From my perspective it seems not far from superstition,
but I doubt very much that's it, or all of it, or any.
Obtusely angling,
chris xx
