I should have mentioned that one of the eighteenth century texts I most
admire is Johnson's 'Life of Savage'. Which I like to think of as 'Johnson's
Life of Savage'. It particularly intrigues me as it seems to show the Large
Man from Lichfield anticipating Dostoevsky. As for Savage, I think he's a
subsidiary character invented by Johnson. In a prose poem.
