I wanted to respond to cris cheek's letter about Alaric's editorial
work, and would have sooner if the past three days hadn't brought a dawn
to dusk work schedule ...
I've noticed that quite a few people are searching out Alaric's
Sound/Text section on Meridian (we love our tracking software) ...
something that would have made him very glad. He worked so very hard
and selflessly on that section and I know he was glad to have the
opportunity to bring work by poets who don't have much of their work
online to a larger audience.
We were just starting to talk about future issues, as I'd asked Alaric
to work with me full time ... one thing he understood so very well was
how much of a debt much of the newer hypermediated literature and poetry
on the web owes to work like what we could call 'concrete' poetry by Bob
Cobbing, Wendy Kramer, Carlyle Reedy, Michael Basinski. So to say that
an editorial pipeline has burst ... yes cris ... burst and ruptured.
What I so appreciated about Alaric's editorial voice was that it was
never trendy and provided a sense of grounding by his careful attention
to the full extent of specific writers' works and development over time.
The direct link into the Sound/Text section is:
http://www.heelstone.com/meridian/soundtext2.html ... and Alaric wrote a
very substantial editorial about the section which can be read at:
http://www.heelstone.com/meridian/editorletter2.html (just scroll my
introduction at the top to find it)
I also hope that when it comes to his own work, all of you get a chance
to see Dear Augustine, which he read in New York last year. I know he
had hoped to have that published on cd/rom ... its physical printed
manifestation evoked illustrated manuscripts. It is a beautiful piece
of writing.
