What we are supposed to be able to do is itself describable as a free act
(we can interpret the text any way we like);
but the attitude in which we address the possibility of committing this
act is not itself an attitude which we can determine freely -- it is a
very overdetermined attitude. We are instructed to act freely.
This is a -social- complex; I think we might now contovert it, but hardly
eliminate it.
I realise now that this sounds a helluvalot like Schopenhauer (the will
