I've been following the recent discussion
on the origin of pub-names
with reference to the Elephant & Castle
and leading on to david bircumshaw's remark

However devotees of international commodification would be pleased to know
that the pubs en-masse are being thoroughly re-named by the same kind of
wankers who devise Arts Marketing Strategies.

There is a pub in Pontefract West Yorkshire called the Cobblers
It was called this not after shoe-makers
but after the men who lay-down cobble-stones
and for years the inn-sign showed a roadmender at work.
Some years ago it was taken over by one of the big chains
and turned into the usual so-called family-pub with bouncy castle outside
and designer-food at fancy prices.
The old sign got ditched and replaced by one showing a shoe-repairer!!
