Geraldine: incidentally, I've been meaning to ask: what are you doing
digging around in Harold Monro? I must confess that a quick glance didn't
spark me too much, though certainly he was a passable writer (rather
unfortunately remembered primarily for things like "Milk for the Cat", which
reads like DH Lawrence doing a parody of Georgian verse from what I recall),
& is perhaps best remembered for "Bitter Sanctuary", a very late poem. As
that poem might suggest, one reason for his disappointing poetic career is
alcoholism.
Apropos of nothing really, one guilty pleasure from the past: Nancy Cunard's
_Parallax_ (Hogarth Press) is a fun read for those wishing to get a whiff of
the poetic air of the times. Oodles of Eliot and Pound-imitation, though
its pilgrimage is rather more touristy than that of countries-of-the-mind.
I can't say it's a terribly good book, though it's certainly her best work
(not long before she'd been writing ghastly sonnets & whatnot), but it's got
period-flavour by the bucketful & some actual poetic skill too.
all best --N
