Ms Kraable is a brilliant musician
& on that alone I'd give what she says credence

i wasn't quite sure what cris was trying to say about gender but anyway i
would like to throw in a comment by american writer michael kimmel: "most
men do not know they have a gender". that might be an interesting place to
start thinking about all sorts of things.
A while back i went to the now defunct China Pig club in Hackney. It was all
improvised music every week. I thought it was great. 1 week caroline kraable
a brill sax player & poet performed a piece in front of a huge newspaper
carpet which whilst playing she proceeded to scrunch through and once thru
perform a poem (i can't remember something about hambone). There were 2
blokes who went to this club every week, at that time so did i. Sometimes
there were only be 3 of us in the crowd. I played there once and there was
only them 2 there. Anyway as she's doing her brilliant thing. 1 of these 2
blokes shouts out 'F'ing shut up will you this is a pile of crap'. I said
why don't you shut up and give her a chance. And the other one said 'you pay
good money to watch this did you?' And they left. Anyway afterwards the
promoter came up to me and said 'thanks for nothing'. I said 'whaty?'. He
said they come every week they have a right to say what they like. They only
like improvised music, you can't blame them that was performance.'
A few weeks later Caroline was playing again in a big band. An improvising
big band with the likes of Alan Wilkinson and Alan Tomlinson. If you know
them you know the noise. I thought it was fantastic but caroline looked
pissed-off all night, and so did Julia the d. bass player. After 1 piece of
rambunction had finished Julia said 'can't you play more quietly to about
the 15 strong horn section. All male apart from Caroline. Alan Tomlinson
shouted back ' why don'y you turn yr amp up it's got knobs on?' And there
was a bit of a bargy. Afterwards I spoke to caroline and she said that she
had hated the evening and that the sound had been too male too dominant. I
said i thought that there are strange power relations going on in
improvisation especially a big band but i thought it was wrong to see them
as just coercive. Loud nasty men V quiet nice wimmin. I think she said
roughly 'that's because you're a man.'
