Perhaps rather less mournfully let me note the passing of the Canadian poet
Al Purdy--I say this because unlike Oliver he had reached a ripe old age (88
I think?) & because (to be frank) the work does not speak in the same way to
me. I've no idea if his reputation's reached to the UK's shores...but
perhaps there'll be a listmember here who has been more engaged with the
work than myself & would have something to say? Purdy was, as they say, a
character, & the obits in Canadian newspapers have been a little
overconcerned with the anecdotal rather than the poetic perhaps.
