I've recently come across some of my own priceless words to this list,
quoted in an academic article, with acknowledgement, but without my
permission having been sought. I'm not greatly concerned in this instance,
and would probably have given my permission had it been sought, but it's a
discourtesy we could all do without, and an abuse of the informality of
the list, which we encourage. It's "provisional" space, where ideas are
worked out, or, as we say, discussed. To spell it out: (a) the threads are
exploratory: by definition, something which is uttered at one point in the
thread may not be the last word and shouldn't be viewed as such; and (b)
why not admit it? there's at least the technical possibility that some of
the things we say in this space may be rubbish, which we'd blush to have
re-circulated.
All postings to this list are copyright to the poster, automatically. That
is stated thus in the Introduction to the list, which is posted to all
members, and found on our webpage:
"Original material posted to the list remains copyright to the poster, and
permission should be sought for any subsequent citing or re-use, including
re-posting."
- and in the general terms and conditions of Mailbase, at:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/copyright.html
In any case I'd've thought it was basic academic practice to seek
permission for quotes such as this.
