The poetry world, like all others, is subject to the slings and arrows
of fortune. This quarter has seen the loss of two significant poets: Douglas
Oliver, the much respected L-A-N-G-U-A-G-E poet, who died in April and Barry
McSweeney, whose long-standing battle with alcoholism led to the publication
in 1997 of The Book of Demons, arguably his finest collection, and also to
an early death in May at the age of 51
