Incidentally, any comments from folks on the latest _PN Review_? An
unusually interesting selection of prose in there--a review-essay by Paul
Quinn on Bernstein's _Republics of Reality_, probably the first serious
mention I've seen of language poetry in _PNR_; reviews of Christopher
Middleton's translations (by Peter Cole); the Roy Fisher book of essays from
Liverpool UP (rev. by Will Wootten); an anthology of Irish 20th-c. poetry
(rev. by Alex Davis); the new book on Brian Coffey by Donal Moriarty (rev.
by Marcella Edwards). There's also an amusing moment in a review of an
issue of _Paris Review_ on poetry, where the reviewer says the symposium on
the state of poetry today is made virtually worthless because everoyne
agrees it's in a terrible state but no-one has the courage to actually name
any particular poets they thought bad or overrated: the reviewer thinks this
a peculiarly American phenomenon (of vague "niceness") but I should perhaps
direct him to a recent exchange on this list to disabuse him of this notion.
There is also a long feature in tribute to Kathleen Raine, in case you
should harbour a yen for her work. & a good piece on Yvor Winters' poetry
by Neil Powell. -- Anyway, thought I'd issue a report: any thoughts welcome.
One can only hope that the unusually diverse range of sympathies on show
in the reviews section might for a change have an impact on the poetry
included in the journal. -- Gotta go now, I have an inexplicable longing for
Mexican beer. -- all best --N
