I will drag myself away from that dreadful Wurtzel woman's brilliantly
written 'Prozac Nation' for a moment to jot a few thoughts down for
our friend.
Douglas Dunn has written only two top-class books: Terry Street and
Elgies. The rest of his work is very inconsistent and is deteriorating
as he ages.
John Fuller has only one poem. The chess poem 'The most difficult
position' first published in 'The New REview' with scrambled titles.
Thom Gunn has interested me for many years, starting out abysmally,
but only coming good in section 4 of 'The man with night sweats'.
The new book 'Boss Cupid' is ok but hasnt quite the strength of that.
Tony Harrison's 'Laureate's Block' must be seen as occasional poems
from a man of 60. Not the marvellous stuff of 'Sonnets from the school
of eloquence' or his versions of Palladas.
Enough. Back to Wurtzel and my kitten.
