Alaric: I think "evaluation" is not a term to be dismissed lightly though I
can understand your impatience with the word & the way it's used: Mr Pain's
questions are clearly meant to provoke & annoy so I can see why you'd
dismiss the topics he broaches. Which is a pity, as I would think that not
to reflect on one's aesthetic preferences at _all_ is absurd; and if you'd
agree with that then the next stage would be to suggest that such
reflectiveness might well be carried out in public forums in the hopes of
clarifying such preferences for yourself & other people. That's not to say
that e.g. "NICE POEM" or "PIECE OF JUNK" aren't perfectly valid
responses--it would be a true nightmare if we held ourselves perpetually to
the highest standards of rigour & articulacy--but I'd think if all one's
responses were cast in that form this would reflect an impoverished view of
the arts as simply a matter of yes/no _opinion_. What's wrong with opinion,
articulacy, etc.: I would have thought saying why something was valuable to
you would be an exemplary act. Title of a Marianne Moore poem: "Picking and
Choosing".
